CS2 Premier vs Competitive: What's the Difference?

Premier and Competitive look alike but rank you differently. Map pick/ban vs map choice, one CS Rating vs per-map ranks, which is more competitive, and which one to play.

Check a CS2 player for bans and cheat reports

CS2 gives you two ranked modes that look almost the same from the main menu. They are not. Premier and Competitive differ in how maps are chosen, how you are ranked and who you end up playing against. Here is how to pick.

The short version

  • Premier: pick/ban map vote, one CS Rating number across all maps, seasonal resets, global and regional leaderboards.
  • Competitive: you choose the map, and you get a separate Silver to Global Elite rank on each one.

How maps are chosen

In Premier, both teams ban maps from the Active Duty pool until one is left, so you need to be comfortable on the whole pool. In Competitive you queue for the maps you want, which makes it the better place to learn a new map or grind the one you love.

How you are ranked

Premier gives you a single CS Rating, colour-coded from grey up to gold. Competitive tracks a rank per map, so you can be Global Elite on Mirage and Gold Nova on Anubis at the same time. The full breakdown of both systems is in CS2 Premier ranks explained.

Which mode is more competitive?

Premier is the mode Valve treats as the main ranked ladder: it feeds the leaderboards and resets each season. It generally has more players who care about their number. Competitive is more relaxed and more varied, because players are often on a map they are still learning.

Cheaters and smurfs

Neither mode is immune. Premier requires Prime status, which raises the cost of throwaway accounts. Competitive per-map ranks make smurfs easy to spot in one way: a brand new account with a single high map rank and nothing else. We cover the tells in smurf vs cheater. If something feels off in either mode, run the lobby through Lobby Check.

So which should you play?

Play Premier if you want one number that reflects your overall level and you are happy on every Active Duty map. Play Competitive to learn maps, warm up, or climb on your best map. Many players do both, and every CSWatch profile shows Premier and every Competitive map rank together, current and best. Look anyone up with the CS2 checker.
